About the Artists…

The Central Islip High School Concert Choir, under the direction of John Anthony, is an organization for which its members are always proud. Since 2003, the Concert Choir has received many acclamations for its work. One of the main missions from the beginning has been to offer students a variety of quality musical experiences.

Since 2004 the choir has visited Orlando, Fla. for the All American Music Festival and The Disney Honors National Choral Invitational (2005, 2007). In 2006, the choir participated in the 250th anniversary celebration of Mozart’s birth in Austria and the Czech Republic (PRAVISA- an acronym for Prague, Vienna and Salzburg). In 2008, the Concert Choir participated in the American Celebration of Music in Italy (VEMIRO- an acronym for Venice, Milan and Rome). The choir has also participated in choral festivals at Queens College, Five Towns College, in addition to their involvement with the NYSSMA Major Organization Evaluation Festival, where the choir has received the highest “Gold with Distinction” rating six times in the last seven years. In April 2009, the choir achieved superior ratings and Best in Class (AAAA) trophies and the Disney Silver Award at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla. In November of 2006, the choir was publicly honored before an audience of thousands at the world famous Carnegie Hall for raising more than $7,500 for a local cancer charity (Camp Adventure) at the Have-a-Heart and Make a Joyful Noise concerts at the high school. In 2010, the choirs donated $6,000 to a local cancer charity and $1,000 to the NYSUT fund for Haiti Relief. In 2012, the choir raised $8,000 for the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

In December 2009, the choir was selected to perform at the NYSSMA All-State Conference in Rochester, N.Y. This past December, the Concert Choir was invited to perform at the White House in Washington, D.C. as part of the 2011 Holiday Celebrations. This past April, the Concert and Show Choir competed at the Heritage Festival Competition in Williamsburg, Va.  and were awarded Gold-1st place trophies as well as plaques for superior ratings across the board. The judges also gave Central Islip the award for being their favorite music department represented at the festival!

From these wonderful and varied experiences, our students develop much more than a love for music. They improve not only their musical skills, but also their character. They learn the value of hard work, commitment, and loyalty. Students often credit Concert Choir as an important reason for receiving scholarship awards, for improved academic performance, or even for completing high school! Students have credited their involvement with music as one of their primary inspirations for teaching them how to reach their maximum potential. Our students are blessed to have music in their lives.

John Anthony, director
John Anthony is a graduate of the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in music education. He has been director of the Central Islip High School Concert Choir and Show Choir since 2001. Since then, he  has successfully led the choir in tours to Orlando, Fla., Williamsburg, Va., Washington, D.C., as well as two European tours including Austria, Czech Republic, and Italy. Mr. Anthony believes strongly that touring with the choir inspires positive life-long attitudes. As Mr. Anthony puts it, “It is about being your best, about expecting your best from others, about learning how to express love through music, and what a powerful force that can be in the world.” Mr. Anthony’s Central Islip Choirs have been featured on NBC News, CBS News, Newsday, News 12 Long Island, TV55, Choral Director Magazine, and MSNBC.
